It has been 12 years since Waris Dirie published her book “Desert Flower” and thereby raised worldwide awareness of the horrible crime that is still happening in African as well as a lot of other countries in the world. A lot has happened since: Laws were passed, which declare the circumcision of women to be a crime, information campaigns have been started to inform women and men about the risks of the practice, and still: Every 11 seconds somewhere in the world a girl becomes victim to FGM, even in regions, where the psychological and physical risks of the procedure have already been explained.

Als ich den riesigen Ballsaal betrat, sah ich mich, wie gewohnt erst einmal um und betrachtete ehrfurchtsvoll die wunderschönen Wandgemälde, die über Generationen der Herrscher zurückreichten. Wunderschöne Königinnen blickten auf den Saal. Ich strich mir die Haare aus der Stirn, doch sie fielen sofort wieder zurück. Also seufzte ich nur. Ein Bote trat an meine Seite. “Uranus, wir sind froh, dich begrüßen zu dürfen!” Ich lächelte. “Die Freude ist ganz auf meiner Seite. Führt ihr mich vor die Königin?” Der Bote nickte. Wir gingen durch den riesigen Saal. Wie immer bemerkte ich die Blicke einiger Ladies, und amüsierte mich insgeheim. Sie bewunderten mich immer nur. Mich aufzufordern wagte keine, aus Angst, man könnte ihr Interesse falsch verstehen.
