Poetry: Wildflower

(Inspired by the song “Wildflower”, played by Keiko Matsui) Too wild to be tame, she would always stand there on the hill. Her head tilted to the sky at sunset, she would stretch out her arms for something far away; something she would never reach. She would stand there in the sun and the rain, in thunderstorms and blizzards, never ceasing to hope; never ceasing to pray. Nobody knows who she was. She appeared one day and bought the little house, up on the hill. Nobody ever saw her live in it; whenever people looked over to the little...

Shane, Shanaynay and co.

Shane Dawson is up-to-date probably one of the most successful Youtubers. According to a news report a few months ago, he makes around US$80.000 each year just by his Youtube videos. Not too bad for a person making online videos, is it? Shane Dawson is the proof for how professional being a vlogger on Youtube has actually become. His comedy videos and sketches are widely popular and he has over 2.5 million (yes, you read right: MILLION) subscribers. In addition to that, he has made it to the conventional media due to the large numbers of subscribers and money that he makes, and thereby left the realms of Youtube. He was talked about in news reports, mentioned in newspapers, and more. So even if you’re not following the Youtube vloggers everyday, you have probably heard of Shane Dawson. His videos usually tend to be a bit extreme when it comes to humor, and therefore are definitely not childproof. Nonetheless, for the viewers who like sarcasm and a lot of dark humor, you will LOVE Shane Dawson. By now, he has several different Youtube channels, all of which are regularly updated. In addition to that, he started selling his own clothesline. I will talk more about him at a later point, and maybe even an interview for VLog Log, so stay...

The Little (Youtube) Mermaid – Traci Hines

In one of my Monday Fun posts, where I was talking about Lana McKissack I already mentioned her briefly, and presented her as one of the rather famous Disney girls on Youtube: Traci Hines. Traci Hines channel can be considered the Disney World on Youtube. Not only does she cover all of the famous Disney (princess) songs, she takes the cover cult further by dressing up as the character whose song she’s singing and thereby creates a unique feeling that an audience would else only have in Disney world. Even though she is sometimes criticized for her rather unnatural looks (hey, come on, she’s trying to portray a cartoon character), Tracy Hines is definitely a guru for all the Disney fans out there. She started her Youtube channel a few years ago, inspired by her dad as she mentions in one of her videos. He was the one who suggested to her to create a Youtube channel and start singing online. And she does so with a lot of success. By now she has her own CD single online for sale on iTunes and amazon.com. Aside from that she is working as a rentable Disney princess for kids parties. Quite a career, don’t you think? And it all started on— that’s right:...

Censorship in the U.S.A.

We all know it, we all have seen it one way or the other – and we all try to ignore it. Censorship. It is not the biggest secret on earth, that Americans are usually first when it comes to content and media censorship. May it be their news reports (anyone watched FOX lately) or children’s books. At least I thought, we were over the entire over-sexualisation after the debate around Disney’s “Little Mermaid” Ariels supposed illicit clothing (swimming around in a shell bra? HELLO?) ebbed away a little. Apparently not… Censorship is still very much alive in the...

Monday Fun: Lana McKissack

Mondays suck! Or so everybody always says… A long work-week starts again after two days of relaxation – at least for most of you. If you’re like me of course, then you’ll have to work the weekends and probably have Mondays of. In that case, Monday Fun will be the perfect way to start your ‘weekend’. ;) And the first Monday fun candidate is definitely Lana McKissack. Being a singer who mostly covers songs, Lana McKissack has already sung duets with David Choi and made a huge impact on the Youtube community. She is probably one of the few “Disney girls” online, since she also loves to cover songs from the popular animation films by the studio. And she does it really well. Personally, I’d consider her the best Disney performer online, even though the umber of viewers will probably rather vote for Tracy Hines. Lana McKissack definitely has a naturality about her, that Hines lacks. And just that is what makes her so charming, as you can see in the fun video below, where McKissack shows that Youtube singing doesn’t have to be all serious in order to be successful. Have a happy Monday and a good start into the next...

Short Story: “Silence Is Golden”

I’m lonely – among thousands of people. I’m smiling – although in my heart I shed tears of unbearable pain. I’m speaking – and still not saying anything. I’m living in the 21st century – and yet I am not alive. In my childhood I was taught about the past, the present and the future. I was taught history, sciences and languages – but I was not taught to speak. Silence is golden, that is what I was taught. We are truly living in a golden age. Listen for a moment. Don’t listen for voices, cars or other sounds...

It’s the end of the week…

…and that means that it is time for Wong Fu Weekends! Wong-Fu Weekends is a weekly fun serial presented by Wong-Fu Productions, one of Youtube’s first and most successful independent production companies. The team of this young and aspiring company are Wesley Chan, Ted Fu, and Philip Wang. How much of an independently working star circle Youtube actually works shows “Wong Fu Productions” perfectly. Their little serials or music-videos feature other Youtube guru’s such as for example “Communitychannel” Natalie Tran, who we reported about some days ago. She appeared in two of their “Wong Fu Weekends” episodes. But also singers like Kina Grannis, or actos/comedians like Kevin Jumba (both of which shall be presented in one of the upcoming articles) frequently appear as part of works produced by Wong-Fu. And another interesting aspect is worth mentioning when it comes to Wong-Fu productions, or maybe even Youtubers in general: the aspect of subcultures. If we take a look at Hollywood and it’s mainstream Euro-American productions, there’s one thing that immediately springs to mind that it misses: diversity. The United States of America (which most of the vloggers come from) is a country full of diversity and different cultural backgrounds. Yet, what Hollywood presents is clearly a white mainstream view of the world, not seldomly following governmental currents/restrictions. Asian-American, Indian-American or Hispanic actors seldomly appear in a mainstream production. It therefore...

Where cool comes to die…

…and pixel commits suicide. Those of you who have been following Youtube and its vloggers know immediately who I am talking about, and those of you who don’t – people, which rock have you been hiding under? ;) Communitychannel, the YouTube vlog by Natalie Tran, a Vietnamese-Australian girl, is one of Australia’s top channels, and on #28 of most subscribed channels globally. Her slogan has long become cult amongst her fans, even though they would probably disagree: Natalie Tran is for sure one of the coolest vloggers. She started out roughly 4 years ago, picking out random everyday situations, and making videos about them. Subjects that thereby come up are something like “The awkward moment when you try to leave an elevator and accidentally brush up to somebody” or “Pretend to like Christmas presents when you really don’t”. The themes that she picks for her videos are down to earth, everyday moments that everybody gets annoyed with or smiles about. She mixes those experiences with information about her everyday life, Lord of the Rings quotes or inappropriate sexual references for fun, presenting herself as definitely one of the coolest nerds out...

“Tales of Mere Existence” – A World of Sketches

At first glance, Youtube most definitely doesn’t seem to be the first choice social media platform for artists like painters and cartoonists. How well the Youtube concept can work for artists nonetheless proves cartoonist and storyteller Levni Yilmaz. His sketch series “Tales of Mere Existence” offer viewers a whole range of stories that come directly out of everyday life. Painting the last strokes as he tells his little stories and anecdotes, “Tales of Mere Existence” make the viewer smile. Well-drawn characters with comic elements, the protagonist representing the artist Yilmaz himself, pull the viewers into their own childhood and experiences. Who cannot relate to the story about wanting to be cool at school and often failing miserably? Or trying to win the heart of your fling at school? Yilmaz tells all those stories in a fresh way, a way that really everybody can relate...
