On this page, you can request to become a member of my private reading circle. That means you’ll receive free copies of special fanfic versions of original fictions that otherwise won’t be available to the general public. You can sign up to become a regular member (meaning you will automatically receive a copy of every ebook that comes out), or you can request access to single story by using the request-form on the respective story’s page.
1. Do I HAVE TO become a member to read your stories?
No. You don’t have to become a member of anything to use this website and access the derivative works posted here. The use of this website is free and will remain so.
I reserve the right to publish select stories per request only. This concerns mostly stories which I could publish as original works given a name change. The reason for that is, that under the current legal situation, I give up all my rights as an author if I publish a story as a derivative work online. And for stories that only have character names in common with the source material, I am just not willing to do that.
You are of course free to decide that this is too much of a hassle for you. That’s your right. As it is my right to decide how and under which terms I make my stories available.
2. But aren’t you publishing the story anyway by making it available in the private reading circle?
No. Handing over a personalized copy to a single recipient is no more publishing the story than handing over one of your DVDs to a friend is ‘publishing’ that DVD. Or giving your manuscript to an editor. As long as I know exactly whom I’m handing the story to and keep records of this, without making the story publicly available for download, I haven’t officially published the story.
3. So what’s with that difference between published and unpublished stories?
In the case of fanfiction, unpublished stories enjoy better protection, because authorship rights protect my right to decide whether a story should be published or not–even in the case of derivative fiction. If I write a Stargate story, not even the original license owners of Stargate, MGM, could force me to publish the story if I don’t wish to do that.
So if somebody reuploaded one of my unpublished stories on their website and offered it for download there against my wish, I could file an official takedown notice and sue them for a violation of my authorship right.
Whereas if I published the story online on my website, I would basically give up my rights and can’t claim authorship rights anymore either.
4. Why do you need so much personal information?
I need personal information such as your real name and postal address in order to legally move you out of the realms of “anonymous public” into a recipient with an identity. Again, the reason for this can be found under 3. If I know exactly who I am handing a copy to, and thereby have a chance of personalizing their copy, I don’t officially publish my story.
5. Do you deny requests?
Oh, yeah. I have denied a few already. If I have a feeling that somebody is being dishonest about their identity, if there are discrepancies in the data they submitted, or if they refuse to provide all the required information, I will deny requests. Usually I will send a reply informing that there’s information missing, or asking the person to clarify on something–so a denial is not a done deal.
I do however have a personal blacklist of known plagiarists and copyright offenders, which means everyone whom I have found in violation of my terms before. People on that list will receive a finite denial with no option to resend. Fanfiction may not enjoy legal protection under the current laws–which means what they’re doing might be legal–however, I am well within my rights to NOT hand personal copies of stories over to people I don’t trust. As I said, even with derivative works, nobody can FORCE me to publish them.
Quite simply put: if you wanna be an ass, I can be one, too. ;)
6. How do you handle my data?
All the data you submit will be handled with utmost care and confidentiality. I’m storing it in an encrypted excel-file on my harddrive. According to German data protection laws, you have the right to inquire about what data I stored about you at any time. If you have never received a personalized ebook, you may also request complete deletion of your data (only in connection with complete removal from the reading circle). Please understand that I can’t delete any information stored in connection with an already sent personalized copy of an ebook.
You can request to be removed from the “Private Reading Circle” at any time by making use of the contact form. No questions asked, no hassle. I will remove you and send you a confirmation of said removal, and then you will not receive any more ebooks in the future.
Please note that the “Private Reading Circle” is different from the general newsletter (from which you can remove yourself by clicking the “Unsubscribe” button at the bottom of each newsletter mail.
