Undercover – Part 1/2 BANG. „Oh no!“ Angela sank her gun. Her boss, Walter looked at her. “Uh... very bad! You’ve to hold your gun still! Look...” He aimed and... hit the black point of the target. Angela sighed. “Oh I’ll never get it!” – “sure you will!” – “Yeah, but not by tomorrow! And you know, Jane Paraday will take every chance to get me out of this!” – “Yeah... but... Angela... you still have the evening to practice!” – “Wow! Thank you!” she growled and he laughed. “Okay, girl! Let’s try it again. You aim... keep your eyes on the point... and keep ‘em open! Your arm becomes part of your eyes...” His arm went along her arm. “And keep it calm.” – “Walter... whatcha doing?” – “helping you. Keep your mind at your task!” He showed at the black point. She giggled. “That tickles! Stop it. I can’t concentrate, if you...” – “May I ask, what’s going on here? Enjoying yourself?” Angela turned around abruptly. “Sean!” she said happily and hugged him softly. “I missed you!” he whispered. “But I see... you’ve fun!” – “More or less...” she murmured. “I’m glad, you’re here!” – “What’s your problem?” – “hitting the black point of the target! Come... I present you to my boss!” They went arm in arm to Walter. “Walter... may I present you? My fiancé Sean!” The man blushed. “You... you’re... uh... I’m sorry, Angela... I didn’t know it. I thought you were...” Angela laughed. “however... Sean, that’s my boss!” – “Hi!” Walter gave his hand to him and Sean raised an eyebrow. “nice to meet you!” – “I dunno... but I have the feeling, that I’ve already seen you somewhere!” Angela caught her breath when she heard Walter’s words. Sure he had seen him. Here on the field, when Sean had tried to kill her and Walter had shot him. She laughed. “Walter! We wanted to practice!” – “Yeah...” He nodded. “Okay, sweetie, try again!” Angela took her gun, aimed and shot. “Shit!” she murmured and sighed. “I guess, I’m just not made for shooting!” Sean Trelawney laughed. “Nonsense!” He took her gun, aimed and hit the black target. Walter’s mouth fell open and he stared at the tall man. “Wow... you’re excellent!” – “Thank you!” Sean smiled at Angela. “see what I mean?” – “Yeah... I do!” When he gave her her gun, she whispered. “And I must say, it’s good to know, that I’m no longer your enemy! This board is about 20 meters away and you hit the middle!” – “I wasn’t security officer for nothing!” he whispered back and smiled. “Does this still take long?” – “Maybe! I’ve a test tomorrow. And if I’m not able to do it...” – “Okay... I’ll help you! Keep your eyes open... don’t hold the gun that tight! Look...” He loosened her fingers a bit. “and now...” his mouth was at her ear. “just concentrate at your aim. Just see the dark point. And if you think, you’re ready, shoot.” Angela sighed. “I can never do it!” – “You can, honey! You could so much more! Impossible are only the things, you don’t try! So try it!” she concentrated and shoot. And she hit the white ring next to the black point. “YEAH!” she jumped. “I hit it!” – “Not the black one!” – “You’re depressing me!” she laughed and looked at Walter. “I got it!” – “Very well! I suggest, you try again for we can see, if you really can it now!” Trelawney went aside and waited. An half hour later, Angela was ready with her lesson for today. Walter smiled. “I think, you deserve your free evening.” – “No practice tonight?” – “No!” – “Wonderful! Thanks! See ya tomorrow!” She took Sean’s hand. “And? What’s the reason for you coming here?” He smiled. “I had a longing... and... I’ve a surprise!” – “Really? What’s it?” – “Uh, uh! Change your clothes at first!” – “Okay! Be patient for a little time, okay? I’ll take a shower. I’m back in 10 minutes!” – “I’ll be waiting!” He laughed, when she hurried away. It didn’t matter to him that she was 13 years younger than him. At the contrary. Her happiness made him happy too, and when he remembered of the first times he had met her, he couldn’t believe, that everything had turned out in that way. He had known, that he wanted her, but he hadn’t imagined anything like love at this moment. He had thought, an affair would just consist of sex, nothing more. As it had been with Anna! But this was so completely different. In Anna’s case he had never felt something like jealousy and now? He felt jealous that often. When he knew her away with her colleagues. When he knew, that she was with Mariano... even when he knew, that she was with Jacob. But he never showed to her, because he didn’t want to give her the feeling that he wouldn’t trust her. He was surprised, how fast she was at his side again. “Ready!” she smiled and he had to admit, that she was looking gorgeous. “so, what’s the surprise?” – “I took this free evening for dinner.” Angela smiled. “Wonderful! So we still have this evening. How long are you gonna stay in New York?” – “I dunno. As long as it takes.” She stopped and looked at him. “Please... promise me to be careful!” – “I promise!” He took her hand. “come on! I can take care of myself, remember?” – “Yeah, yeah!” She sighed. He would stay in New York at least one month. “Sean?” – “Mmm?” – “May I visit you... next week-end?” – “Hey! Why not? Do you think, I’ve another woman there? Of course you can visit me! Whenever you want.” “Shht!” Angela giggled. “I don’t want to get trouble with my nice neighbor!” She put her hand at Sean’s mouth. “she hates young people!” She tried to unlock the door, but she didn’t get the key into the lock. “Uh... my goodness!” She got to her knees and opened the door. “Come in!” She threw her shoes into the corner next to the door and kissed the man. “I’ll miss you terribly!” she murmured and he lifted her softly up. “You’ll visit me!” – “It’s not the same!” – “Sure, but... the longer you don’t see me, the bigger is your longing and desire!” – “you’re awful... but that’s why I love you that much!” She kissed him again and again and he opened the door to her bed room. Just in that moment he wanted to lie her down on the bed, her cell-phone rang. “just don’t pay attention!” he murmured, but the little telephone didn’t stop ringing. So she finally freed herself and took it. “Bennett.” She sighed. “Walter! I... yeah, it’s a little disturbing at the moment. ...WHAT?!? ...with all due respect, but that’s not our case! Murder... we’re responsible... no! We’re responsible for computer crimes and... Ouu... Walter! It’s the last night with my friend... oh, I told you several times, that this night... Walter!” She got silent for a moment. “Yeah, okay! I wanna keep my job... no, I’m not cursing anymore. Yeah... See you soon...” She finished the call and looked growling at Trelawney. “I’m sorry! I’ve gotta go. They found a female corpse. The girl was barely 25 and disappeared a week ago. I’ve to go there.” He feel backwards to the mattress. “Okay... guess, that’s what you get being involved with a FBI agent.” She laughed and kissed him softly. “I’ll hurry up, okay? I don’t understand, why that’s a CIC case. But I’ll see.” She got up and stumbled a bit. “for heaven’s sake...” she murmured. “I shouldn’t have drunk that much.” – “You couldn’t know, that you would be called.” – “Yeah...” she took her shoes. “Will you be waiting?” He went to her and took her softly in his arms. “I’ll be. You know, for you I’d wait until the end of time.” She laughed, when she heard his words. “I’ve never heard you saying anything romantic like that!” She kissed him. “I’ll hurry up.” She opened the door, then she stopped. “If you need anything... the refrigerator is full of food!” – “Okay.” He smiled. “See you!” – “Yep... Bye!” She closed the door behind her. Angela turned away and went a few steps. Walter followed her. Her shoes sank into the muddy ground. Why had it to rain at a moment like this? “You alright?” When she heard the voice, Angela turned to face him. “Sorry... I’m not used to corpses yet. Especially because this woman was circa my age.” He nodded and seem to understand. “I’m sorry that I have to tell you some clues. She was 25, born in Atlanta, Georgia, her name is Melissa Brighton.” Angela nodded and warmed herself in wrapping her arms around her chest. “Yeah... but I don’t understand... why this is a case for CIC!” – “It’s pretty easy! She isn’t the first victim who was killed that way. First rape, then a finger of every hand cut and after...” – “Enough...” Angela had lifted her hand. “It’s okay!” she looked up to the sky which was covered with clouds. “come to the point!” she exclaimed and he nodded. “Okay... all these women we found, visited a web page before they died. All the same. It’s the page of a sect which is called “Devil’s brides”. All women disappeared a week before they died and all woman died in distances of exactly 13 days.” Angela meditated a moment and gazed at him. “You think of ritual murder?” – “Exactly. A sect that catches its victims in the internet.” He looked into her face. “What about you? what do you think about it?” – “Yeah...” She yawned. “Sorry... I... I don’t know. I’ve a feeling that it is much more than just a sect!” – “Why?” – “I dunno! Just a feeling! But maybe, I’m only tired!” – “Having had a long night?” – “Definitely none of your business!” She smiled and looked at her watch. “do you still need me?” – “Actually... yeah!” he said and Angela sighed. “Walter! Sean goes to New York for a couple of weeks tomorrow. This is our last evening... sorry... night, ‘cause it’s already 0.14 am... and I wanna spend it with him.” – “With all due respect and understanding, Angela, but this is your job! You’re FBI agent and you’ve got to be there when it is necessary. Don’t think, I wouldn’t rather go home, but we’ve gotta finish our business here!” He sounded really angry and Angela nodded. “Sorry. So... how to handle this?” – “We’ll wait until autopsy is done!” – “Oh no! This is gonna take hours!” – “Yes... and this time we can examine that mysterious web page!” With a sigh, Angela followed him to his car. “Poor girl!” – “what? – “I thought about her, Melissa! She just wanted to get backing and a faith in that sect.” – “Yeah... and that’s what they take advantage of, those pigs!” He sat down on the seat of his black car. “Have a seat. Want a coffee?” – “No, thanks! I can’t drink anything now!” She read the file in her hands which reported the missing of Melissa. “She was still living in Atlanta! But how... did she get here? We’re in Virginia... that’s at least 700 miles away!” – “Maybe she was called to visit the leader of the sect!” supposed Walter and swallowed a mouthful of his coffee, only to burn his mouth. “Ouch... damned!” Angela hid a grin and read the file again. The corpse was brought into a black car. Angela didn’t envy the men their job. She was glad to be on the theoretical part. “I suggest...” she mentioned and faced Walter. “We try to get the other files and make a plan, where the murders happened. Maybe they have some kind of system in their places.” – “Good idea! We’ve time until we get the autopsy report. Fasten your seatbelt, please!” Angela looked at the woman’s photo again. “she’s almost looking like me, isn’t she?” Walter looked at the photo, then at her. “Yeah, doubtless!” he wondered, then he started his car and drove towards the office. “Look... there... there... and there... that’s all. What does it look like?” Jacob yawned and took a cola. “A circle!” – “Exactly!” Angela looked at Walter. “There are only two points missing... there... and there! One in Pennsylvania and one in New York! That’s it! They’re still in need of two victims! And we should find them until they find their victims! ...Jacob! do you listen at all?” – “Sure, angel! And if you ask me... we should try to find the owners of this damned web page! Should be easy!” – “not that easy!” Walter looked up from his computer. “you should take this part, Angela! I think, you’re much better than me!” Angela went to him and looked on his screen. “Mmm... there’s no owner registered. Let’s try...” She sat down. “Uh... they are clever! They saved the whole personal data with some firewalls and passwords. But I should be able to bypass them. It will just take a bit! Come on, Jacob! Raise your back and help me!” – “Uh... slave driver!” – “Should get used to it! This is reality!” Angela smiled and yawned as well. “But be sure, I’d like to be at home, too!” – “How’s Sean?” – “Very well, I think! He’s going to New York tomorrow. I think, I’ll be missing him crazy!” Angela murmured, while looking on her screen. “I’d like to spend this evening with him... but this is still going to take till morning.” She was right. When she finally entered her apartment, the clock showed 5.30 am. The dawn broke yet and the first sunbeams lightened the rooms. Angela opened the door to her bedroom to find Sean sleeping on her bed. He was fully clothed and seemed to have waited the whole night. Angela smiled softly. “I’m sorry!” she whispered and closed the curtains. She took her alarm clock and put the alarm on. 9.00 am was the time she had to get up. She lay down next to Sean, covering him softly with the warmth of her body. He sighed softly and opened his eyes. “Angela...” – “Sorry.” She murmured, already half asleep. “This took longer... than it has meant to take...” He closed his arms around her body and buried his face in her hairs. Not even a minute later he was asleep again and Angela finally found her peace, too. The annoying sound of the alarm made Angela awake from her beautiful dream. She moaned and pulled her pillow over her head. “No.. not yet...” She felt for her lover, but Sean wasn’t there. Angela finally opened her eyes and looked around. “Sean?” When nobody answered, she cursed. “What a morning...” And when she now thought about it, she remembered him going. Yes... he had gotten up and she had tried to hold him back. She remembered his soft words. “I’ve got to get my flight, honey! But you still have two hours to sleep!” He had kissed her cheek and covered her body with her blanket. Then she had fallen asleep again. And now she realized, that she was still fully clothed. “Oh my God!” She murmured. “I’ve to take a shower. And the meeting is in 20 minutes! What a morning!” she got up and entered the bathroom. Standing in front of the mirror, she wanted to break it, when she saw her face. She looked tired (and she felt so!), her hairs were a complete mess and her skin looked as pale as a death’s one. “Wonderful! Morning Angela!” She turned on the water of the shower and let her clothes fall to the ground. The hot water livened up her skin and her spirit. And when she switched warm into cold, she was fully awaken. Shivering, she covered her body with a towel and went to the kitchen for making her a cup of hot coffee. She would rather like to go to bed again instead of working. And when she entered the office an half hour later, her temper wasn’t better. “Morning.” – “Morning!” Walter said with a glance to his watch. “You’re 20 minutes late!” – “Sorry!” she murmured and sat down at her desk. “I had to take a shower and I barely got 4 hours sleep last night.” He murmured anything disliking and got up. “Here... the autopsy report.” – “Fine! Where’s Jacob?” – “In university. He has courses... as every morning.” – “Uh... yeah, right. I forgot.” She opened the autopsy file and moaned, when she saw the pictures of the corpse. “this is going to be a wonderful day!” she said sarcastic and Walter shrugged his shoulders. “That’s our job.” – “Yeah...” She sighed. “As far as I can see... the same as all the other girls. Let’s see if we can mark the order in which the murders happened.” She went to the plan. “Melissa... is the newest...” It took them about an hour to mark the order and find a system. “Look... the next should be in New York.” – “Yeah... always north... outh... north... south... and always in same distances.” – “Yes! So if we could get the last to places the matches with the distances...” – “...we have the next places of crimes and could be waiting there!” – “Right!” Angela looked at him. “How long has Melissa been lying there?” – “Pathology means at least 5 days.” – “So we have highest 8 days to the next murder. And then 13 to the last one... what to do now?” she looked at him questioning. He sighed. “Don’t know...” – “You’re the boss!” – “Yeah, but you’re the good cop with the right ideas!” – “Okay... I’d propose... we take a decoy.” – “Decoy?” – “Yeah... it’s improbable that they already have their last victim. And we could...” – “Oh no! Angela! That carries too far!” Walter turned and went back to his desk. “I’d carry all the responsibility for... no... besides I don’t know a girl that would be crazy enough to do the decoy!” – “I would!” – “Yeah, but you are...” – “I am looking similar to the other victims! All of them were between 20 and 30, all of them were thin and had long brown hair. You admitted yourself, that Melissa was very similar to me!” – “Yes, but that didn’t mean that I would support anything crazy like that!” he said. “No discussion!” Angela folded her arms. “Okay... so we wait until we find the last two victims, only to hear a moral predict by Jane Paraday for being bad cops and...” – “Okay... okay!” He sighed. “I see the problem! Okay! But, Angela... be careful! And most important... stay in contact with me and do nothing without telling me! You’re not that long an agent that you could stand this alone!” He shook his head in disbelief. “I wonder, why I say yes to this... this... insanity!” Angela smiled and opened her mail account. “Okay... I’ll ask innocently for information about their sect and that I heard from a friend about this web-page. I’ll use my yahoo account. It’s anonymous and so...” she wrote an e-mail and send it. “Now we’ve got to wait!” she smiled heart-breaking at Walter and he sighed. “Maybe I should tell your fiancé about your insane idea!” – “He won’t be able to do anything because he’s in New York.” – “Poor guy...” he murmured. “He must be driven crazy about your insanity!” – “Uh... we get along very well!” she smiled. Five minutes later she had an e-mail answer. “they’re very fast... they... want a photo of me!” She went to their scanner and lay down a photo on the glass surface. “Okay... let’s give them... what they wanna have!” She scanned the photo. “Beautiful... so...” Walter just shook his head. “I wonder how I could give my permission... I must be crazy...” In the afternoon, Jacob came to the office. “Hey fans!” Walter didn’t look up. “You did your homework?” – “Sure Daddy!” Jacob grumbled sarcastic and Angela smiled. The boy threw his bag into a corner of the office and sat down next to Angela. “And? What are you two doing?” – “At least we don’t change the office into a waste hall... could you take your back out of the corner and away from the printer?” exclaimed Walter and Jacob pulled a face. “Hey, I’ve heard, you are working at this sect case!” – “Yeah!” Angela nodded and swallowed a mouthful of tea. “We’ve already entrapped them!” – “Ah...” Jacob took his bag. “May I ask how!” – “Pretty easy! All the victims looked like me!” – “Oh... no! Please don’t tell me, that you...” Jacob looked at Walter, who nodded. “I’ve already told her, that she’s absolutely crazy. But she’s stubborn!” – “Angel!” – “Jacob! It’s the only possibility to trap them! They’re absolutely anonymous and so...” She looked at her screen, when she got an e-mail. “YEAH! They took it! They want to get acquainted with me!” Walter looked up. “When?” – “Next week...Friday afternoon in... Harrisburg, Pennsylvania!” she looked at Walter and he shook his head. “But that doesn’t match! The next murder should be in New York!” – “Yes! But next Friday... is exactly one week before the next murder! All victims disappeared one week before their murder! And if I’m right... our next victim should disappear today or tomorrow in New York!” – “Yeah, but the problem is that all of them don’t live in the towns they disappear in and that they aren’t murdered in the towns they disappear in!” – “Yes... but Jacob could calculate the places!” – “Me?!?” – “Yeah, you! You’re good at maths, aren’t you? and besides, WE don’t have the time to do it!” – “Okay, understood!” He looked at the plan. “Give me a few minutes to get into the essence!” Angela jumped to the telephone, when she heard the ringing. “Yeah, Bennett?” She fell into the sofa. “Angela! It’s me!” – “Sean!” Angela’s face lightened up. “how are you?” – “Oh, well thank you! I only wanted to say, that I got here alive!” When she heard the joke, she laughed. “I had no doubts on that one! I just worried, you couldn’t count the murdered on one hand anymore!” – “Uh... that’s not fair!” She could hear him grinning. “What about you? You sound a bit... out of breath.” – “Yeah! I was in kitchen, when I heard the phone. I’m doing my dinner.” – “Me too! Well... at least... some kind of it!” – “May I guess... pizza service?” – “Kind of that!” He laughed. “And? How was your day?” – “Very stressing. But very exciting, too. I am allowed to be decoy for that murderers. That’s gonna be some exciting days!” – “Angela! I’m not okay with it!” – “I thought, you’d not be! But I got through worse situations! Remember?” – “Yeah, but that’s different! They’re cold, brutal murderers. And I don’t want you to be found in a forest!” – “Okay... but... where do you know about them?” – “About the internet! You’re not the only one surfing!” She heard him sighing. “I guess, I can’t stop you, can I?” – “right! It’s my job!” She took a piece of cheese. “Besides, I’m able to defend myself!” She swallowed a mouthful of water. “You should know that!” – “Yeah, and it’s good to know, that you can use a gun now!” – “Very funny! Be happy, that I wasn’t able to use it in the camp! You could be dead now!” – “I’ve doubts that you would have killed me!” – “I would have done!” – “Sure! Let’s talk about the reason, why you surely wouldn’t have killed me, when I’m back.” – “I was desperate! I was prepared to do everything I had to for coming out of the trouble!” she yawned. “Boy, I’m tired!” – “I don’t wonder about that. You came very late tomorrow morning, didn’t you?” – “Yeah...” she murmured. “But Walter meant, we had to work the whole night. So I did it. At least we got an idea about how they’re working.” She sighed. “Know what?” – “No.” – “I already miss you!” – “Glad to hear that!” – “I wish, it wasn’t such a strong feeling! Whatcha doing at the moment?” – “I’m sitting on my sofa and I’m working on my laptop.” – “Wonderful... sounds interesting.” She said sarcastically and he laughed. “You could come and I show you the essence of the job!” – “I wish, I could. But I have to prepare for my task as decoy.” They discussed about half an hour, then Sean gave up. “Okay... I see, that I could only stop you, if I tied you... and since I’m far apart of you, that’s unfortunately impossible!” – “I’ll be carefully! I promise!” – “I hope so!” they were silence for a moment, then Angela sighed. “What are you doing?” – “I’m working. I’m sitting on my desk and read some papers!” – “Sounds boring!” Angela noticed and he gave a snort. “IS boring, honey. I’d like to be with you know, but unfortunately I can’t just take a flight and go away. If I say I’m a lawyer, I should do the work, too. Otherwise I could only earn money in becoming security officer again.” They still salked about 10 minutes, then they finished their call, because Angela had go to bed. “Okay... sleep well!” – “Yeah... you too. Love ya!” – “Bye!” Angela sighed, when she went the steps up to her bedroom. She was so tired, that she fell onto the bed without dressing herself out. But it didn’t matter to her at the moment. She just had to sleep. She knew, it would be very hard work the next weeks... To be continued...
